Community Awareness - You are the Carpenter of your Life


A CARPENTER

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire, and he told his boss of his plans to leave and live a more leisurely life with his wife. He would miss the paycheck, he could get by, but he needed to retire.

The contractor was sorry to see such a good worker go, and he asked the carpenter to build just one more house as a personal favor

The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.

When the carpenter finished his work, the contractor came to inspect the house. He handed the front-door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," contractor said. "It is my gift to you."

The carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.

So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then with a shock we realize we have to live in the house we have built.

If we could do it over, we would do it much differently. But we cannot go back...

You are the carpenter of your life. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall.

Your attitudes and the choices you make today build your "HOUSE" for tomorrow.Think about it !

Learn how to Achieve your Goals

School, like most other things, is made for goals. Not every student thinks of it this way--in terms of planning, tracking progress, making adjustments. If they want to do well, however, they need to start. And so do you. Once you decide on the goal, your brain changes. It scans the environment differently, picking up cues and clues that you didn't see before. It approaches problems differently, looking for a way around and not reacting with frustration. Instead of letting the world zip by without notice, your brain snaps into action and works, almost subconsciously, to help you succeed.

Imagine you've just stepped outside your front door, ready for a stroll around the neighbourhood. There is no plan, no goal. You just walk forward. When you hit an intersection, you go whichever way feels better. Without a plan,  you are heading for trouble. You could get lost. You could wander into dangerous areas. You could go so far out that you're too tired to come back in. When you wander, you're at the mercy of chance and the world. This is true from finding your love in life to passing your college exams.

Don't approach school as a neighborhood stroll. Don't wait to be hit with good news or bad. Instead, approach it as you would approach a timed puzzle game. Set a concrete goal, form a plan, and start the ball rolling. If things don't go well, if you don't solve the puzzle, change your plan and dive back in. How you think about school is crucial. To get motivated, to get value out of any tips you find here, you need to have the right mindset. You need to look at succeeding in school as a matter of goals with all their fixings.

Some Concrete Examples:
Do you know how babies learn to grasp objects?

They first hold the object incorrectly so it drops from their hands.
And then they hold it incorrectly the second time and it drops again.
And then they hold it incorrectly for the third time and then it falls again.
And then they hold incorrectly for the fourth time and the fifth, and the sixth,
until they manage to find out the right way to hold the object.

Have you ever seen a baby that decided to quit learning and stopped grasping objects because it failed many times to hold them correctly? Sounds funny but the sad thing is that you do the thing that babies never do!

You try once or twice then give up because you failed without being aware that the only way to reach your goals and to get something that you want is to keep trying until you manage to find out the right way that works. Thomas Edison understood this fact and that’s why he kept trying 999 times until he managed to invent the lamp on the 1000th try. Thomas wasn’t trying to become rich or to do something that others did but he was trying to invent something that no one invented before yet he never gave up hope. Do you know why Thomas Edison succeeded? It’s because he understood that success is all about the number of tries.  When he was asked how he managed to continue trying even though everyone was making fun of him he replied saying “whenever someone told me you failed I replied saying no I didn’t, I just found another way if how to not to invent the lamp”.  In short Thomas knew that sooner or later he was going to discover the right way and that it’s only a matter of the number of tries.

The same happened with the English novelist John Creasy.  John understood that success was all about the number of tries and nothing more and so he kept submitting his work to different publishers who kept sending him rejection letters. When his name became known for being rejected he decided to submit his work with different names.  John got 753 rejection slips using his 14 different names.  However on the 754th attempt john’s writings were accepted and he published 564 books.  John Scatman used to stutter to the extent that he used to repeat each phrase about 6 times before saying it. At that point john didn’t just decide to sing but he decided to sing very fast so that even people who speak normally won’t be able to sing as fast as him. John kept trying and trying until he managed to release his famous album ‘Scatman’ which was considered one of most successful music albums at his time as more than six million copies were sold, quite an impressive number at this time. Warren Buffet the richest man in the world made his money from investments yet he was rejected in his early years and his tutor recommended that he chooses another career that is not related to the stock market.  Again Buffet understood that it’s all about the number of tires and that’s why he kept trying until he managed to reach his goals. Had John Creasy stopped trying, he would have never managed to become successful and he might have considered himself unlucky. Had John Scatman gave up so early you would have never heard of his name and he would have also considered himself unlucky.

Lucky people aren’t the ones who succeed from the first attempt, but they are the ones who keep trying and trying until they bump into the right opportunity and so become successful.  We create our own bad luck by giving up so early then we call it misfortune. If you think that you are not rich because you are not lucky then it’s time to get rid of this false belief and know that the day you stop trying is the same day you become unlucky.

Some Common Parenting Tips to Discipline Children

Children require structure and predictable rules. Above all, they require attention. Back in the old days, parents inquired about their school work from their children when they came home from school. Some parents may not have known how to do long division. They may not have known how to write or how to construct an essay. But they knew how to nudge their children because they wanted them to be something.






Parents back then might have said, "Well, what did they do today in geometry?" They may have thought isosceles was a guy from the history book and that a hypotenuse was a big ugly animal in Africa, but they knew their kids. They would make them go to their room, get the books, sit with them, and go over it. And even if they didn't understand, they'd pretend to. They pretended to because they knew kids needed an education. That need hasn't changed.




Share your experience. 
Wise parents or caregiver shares their wisdom. They tell children about useful social skills as well as about the need to be responsible and orderly. A child who is disciplined will be more obedient and also more organized as a student. He'll do better in school and in life.






Educate your children. 
Good discipline is key to supporting the learning and education that our children need. Kids do better academically and are less likely to drop out if they take more responsibility for their school success. Self-disciplined people are more likely to succeed at whatever they do.









Distinguish discipline from punishment. 
This is not just a word game. Discipline and punishment really are different things. Discipline may include punishment but aims for a much higher goal. Discipline includes other ways to shape a child's behavior for the long term, not just for the short term. The aim of good discipline is to teach children self-control and the difference between right and wrong, which becomes part of their inner character.





Behave the way you want your children to behave. 
Children learn discipline in ways that parents need to be aware of. For instance, children will learn right and wrong by watching what their parents do. If parents lie, the kids will. If parents use foul words, so will the kids. If parents use violence at home, the kids will use it in the streets, the same with alcohol and drug abuse and cigarettes. This stuff starts early. We know a kid whose first words were "lousy bum," and he used them, echoing his father to address a fielder who dropped the catch in the one-dayer.

You parents and caregivers who don't want the kids to do these things, don't do them yourselves. That's the first step. If you have other bad habits, like being sloppy or late, don't expect the kids to be neat, or on time. You can say, "Do what I say, not what I do," all you want, but when you turn your head, the kids will do what you do.
 Actions speak louder than words. Whatever behaviors and attitudes you want for the children, you'd better model them in your life.




Tone down your language.
As a parent or caregiver you should consider the language you use within the four walls of your home. Curb the yelling and the angry tone. For instance, imagine your child making a ‘Father’s Day Card' on your computer. Listen to yourself say, "Thats lovely." Then ask yourself, How am I saying it? Do I sound like a parent who cares? Or do I sound like a prison guard? Your kids can tell the difference.



Listen to your children.
Think about sitting down with the children in your charge and asking them with a smile and a relaxed expression, the very simple question, "What makes you happy?" They'll be glad to answer that. And then ask, "What makes you sad?" Don't even get into anger. Just ask, "What makes you sad?" And then you can deal with it from there. Try that every day, just talking to the children.


Reward good behavior.
The best kind of reward is praise. If a child usually makes a mess at the table, praise her when she doesn't make a mess. And make sure she helps to clean up the mess she does make. In this way, you are helping to reinforce the behaviors in your child that you want to continue Penalties help, but they should not be excessive and should be linked with the misbehavior that you are attempting to modify. For instance, if your kid is not getting enough sleep because of staying up too late, the penalty could be an earlier bedtime. The reward could be a compliment when wakes up refreshed in the morning and looking like a million bucks. Children need limits set by parents or caregivers, often to protect them. You can't let your kid run out into the street where he might get smacked by a car. You restrain him and say very firmly, "No, no, its dangerous. You can get hit by a car!" There is no need to spank. You took the time to explain, and you were firm. With repetition, the child will get the message and learn not to run into the street. Setting limits also involves setting rules that children are expected to follow. Tell them that dirty clothes go in the hamper, garbage goes in the trash, food goes nowhere near the bedroom, and adults are to be respected, not talked back to.

Children need to know what you expect from them by the limits you set. And you must be consistent. If there is no TV on school nights, there is no TV on school nights. Stick to these rules no matter how loudly kids whine. If you let them change your mind by throwing a fit, they have won a victory that is not good for them or for you. In fact, you will have validated the outburst by giving in. Sometimes adults cave in because they feel the children won't love them if they don't. But, in the long term, children will love and respect adults more if they are consistent. And remember, consistency doesn't mean being rigid when you realize circumstances have changed. Parents and caregivers should put a positive spin on rules. For instance, "Please put dirty clothes in the hamper," works better than, "Don't throw your dirty clothes on the floor." "Treat family with respect" is more useful than, "Don't smack your little sister." Too many "Thou Shalt Nots" encourages some children to defy authority or express anger. Even with the positive tone, you still have to be firm and consistent.




Give children choices. 
You can also discipline children by giving them choices. Do they want to take a bath before or after dinner? When the kids choose the time, they have made a commitment to take a bath, which is what counts. Do they want to wear the black pants or the green pants to a religious ritual? They get the choice, but you have just told them they are not wearing jeans.
Likewise, you can let them choose from a variety of foods as long as the choices are all good ones. Children who are given choices feel respected. They are also learning independence, which becomes especially important during adolescence. Children who are allowed to make small choices at young ages are better prepared to deal with the larger choices when not so young.


With proper discipline at home, kids behave well when they are away from home and out of sight of their parents or caregivers. Disciplined kids are less likely to disrupt the classroom or bully and intimidate other kids. Your self-disciplined child is someone you can count on to take responsibility for what he does and is less likely to do what others want him to. Disciplined children know the difference between right and wrong and are less likely to go wrong, and today there are a whole lot of ways to get there, illicit drug and alcohol abuse, premature sexuality, violence. You name it, someone is doing it. But it doesn't have to be your kid.

Not sure how else to discipline your child? The following suggestions on nonphysical ways to control your child:

Sometimes children need to have an immediate punishment. "Physical punishment is a bad idea, "Unless it's an extreme circumstance." slapping children on their hands is acceptable if they've done something really bad, but that's as far as you should go.

Some people say that parents should never physically discipline their children, but parents should reserve it for a time when a child is truly out of control. "It's not for everyday discipline. "Once or Twice a year, and no more." 

However, hitting a child is usually counterproductive, and there is a big difference between a slap on the hand and the use of violence to scare children. "One comes from a parent in control, and one comes from a parent decidedly out of control. "Know the difference, stay under control and discipline with love, not fear. Only use something physical as a final resort." 



Tell your child to go to his room and stay there.
Use a timeout, and have a regular timeout corner in the house. "If you're out of the house when the situation happens, make them have a timeout wherever they are, "Then, take them straight home."

Deprive them of a certain privilege. Taking away a favorite video game or computer and television time, are good examples, around the house.

Give your child a severe verbal scolding. "You can tell your children why what they've done is wrong and why they have to be punished as a result.
"Remember that whatever you threaten to do, you have to follow through with it."



"The debate over whether to smack your child's hand will never ultimately be settled, and parents must therefore do what they feel comfortable with. What we all agree, however, is that corporal punishment must be used very sparingly, if it is to be used at all. The best alternatives are timeouts and depriving your child of something they like so they get the message that you're the parent and the boss!"
